The 5 P’s of the helicopter view
2. Pattern
Greatness and mediocrity usually have a visible pattern. You should recognize it when you see it. Sometimes you see some ladies willing to marry a man who is struggling to make ends meet; most times it is because they have observed the his life pattern and they are assured he has got a great future.
You should also be able to observe the pattern of your life while getting the helicopter view.
One of my prime turning points in life occurred when I observed the pattern of my life and realized it was not different from that of an average unbeliever on the streets. An average person I saw in my locality had this trend: You are born; you attend nursery and primary school; you work hard to get admitted to a good secondary school and become the prisoner of that system; you experience the same thing when you get into a university or polytechnic; you graduate and start searching for a good job; you get a job and seriously consider getting married; you get married and have children; you spend time training your children while meeting the demands of your work; you get old in the process and retire; And one day, … you die! Although some people seem to have more material things than others as they go through this regular pattern, the truth is that apart from the struggle to do all these things, there is no other real meaning to their lives. Please don’t let that happen to you.
I was in the university when I observed that up till that moment, my life pattern was simply following the trend I have described above. I immediately realized I needed to get out of that rut. I thank God I can now see that life is not all about making a living and I have started doing superior things outside this regular pattern. I desire that you do the same.
